Unspecified date in Quantum Leap History: 1692

The revival series (2022-2024) did not always supply a specific leap date. For the remainder of this year, we will feature each of the remaining leaps without exact dates.

"A Kind Of Magic"

Ben leaps back to 1692 -- the farthest he's ever been -- where he finds himself on trial for practicing witchcraft; with limited records online, the team must race to save him before he's put to death.

I will be honest this was the one episode I had a hard time enjoying first time watching it . But changed my mind with rewatching it a few times.

Mostly because of how far in the past this is. Don had his rules for limiting Leaps to Sam’s lifetime for legitimate reasons. Partly due to limitations of a television. But more importantly because it becomes less relatable to us watching the show. More of a historical costume drama and less about the people. Which is what Quantum Leap is really about.

I am happy the revival expanded the time frame of Leaps. Many of the best episodes are before Ben’s lifetime. This one seemed so random. Also farther in the past you go, the changes to history should be bigger. It’s been months since I saw this but do we hear what happens to anyone in the new history. A generation or two of a family’s new life is easy to update at end of episode. But multiple centuries?

Personally the rule Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis had for the Back to the Future trilogy applies to Quantum Leap too. Part III was in 1885 because obviously they wanted to do a western. But also it worked because still Hill Valley existed. But you go back farther and no Hill Valley. Which is huge character in itself.

Not to forget my point - I did grow to like this episode. The women in this episode really make it work and how the story exposes the towns superstitions and rush to judgements.

But sad truth is a very similar story could have been done anytime in the 20th or 21st Centuries. Obvious place for a “witch hunt” story would have during the Red Scare of the 1950s.
