"Leap Home Part II"

ok, yes i know i post too much, but i warmed you people, hehe. just a little joke.

ok, anyway, i was just noticing a strange connection in this episode watching it just now. remember when maggy was dying she looked up at Al and said something we could barely make out if at all, and Al gasped "she can see me". well i watched it with the captions just now and the word was "pulitzer", and here is the defenition:

Pu?lit?zer Audio pronunciation of "pulitzer" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (plt-sr, pylt-), Joseph. 1847-1911.

Hungarian-born American journalist and newspaper publisher who established and endowed the Pulitzer Prizes.

and the prize Al later says she won for the last photograph, of him, they said was called the Pulizer prize. so maybe in her dying state, i was right in the idea i stressed with me best friend after ,my very first veiwing of this episode with her, and she DID reconize him from the photo she just shot and was thinking something along the lines of that photo being her prize winner, wheather she was alive or not. ? i do not know but that is a strange connection, that got me all curious.

oh and another strange conwinkie dink that i remembered was at the end when Tom says "ha, it's midnight, offcially april 9th and i'm still alive" and then puts his arm around Sam, who is suppose to be magic to him and says "thanks to you little brother"

You're right that Maggie said the word "Pulitzer" because she recognized Al. In the original history, she never took that photograph. But since Sam changed history, Maggie went off on her own and snapped new photographs, which now would ultimately win her the prize. She had no way of ever knowing she would win it, though.

Sam of course felt that he traded a life for a life, but at least one positive aspect of this was that Maggie died with honor. Aside from more of a symbolic meaning (which I know is how it was meant), I think the reason why Maggie was able to see Al was because her brain might have gone into a natural alpha state while she was dying.

As for Tom calling Sam "little brother," it was a combination of being a reference to how Sam acted during the leap (reminding Tom of himself because of course he saw "Magic") and just for an interesting type of "kiss with history."

yeah i would figure so, that's what i thought in the first place.

as for the pulitzer thing, how could she have reconized Al as the sam Al from the picture? and what was she thinking exactly when she said pulitzer?

i was also thinking something else just now. shouldn't Sam have picked up before that Al was a POW becasue he found that out in MIA cause that's why beth married dirk or whatever the lawyers name was.

I agree with the alpha state scenario. I had a story for the Virtual Seasons where it was that principle in reverse based on Maggie's reactions in Leap Home II. Sam was dying, his synaptec functions were breaking down, so in turn everyone witnessed the leapee "turn" into Sam's image and then could briefly also see Al because the illusion was broken. Basically, I think near death experience allows the aura to be broken depending on how close to death a person is...

SamBeckettfann... I think that it's great that you have questions regarding the show.

We have analyzed the show and watched and watched and et al so much so that we may have forgotten what it's like to come in and see them for the first time. The awe of it all - the WOW... that WAS a cool episode because of this... because of that...

As for what you mentioned earlier... this was an episode that I spent the better part of two years writing a novel trying to get out a story that was in my mind. Unfortunately, it was erased (with all the mistakes that were with it) from the fan fiction area here at the board - I think.

Maggie was there for one main reason - to get a story - and to hopefully get a chance at taking a picture that would win her the Pultizer Prize. Being out there in the midst of all the fighting and snapping a picture of a POW being taken to another area and for him to actually turn around and see the picture being taken.... ohhhhhh yeah, buddy... that was it.
And as Al said at the end of that one - she did get it.

As for the reason why Maggie could see Al at the end right before she passed... I agree with Greg. The Alpha state came into effect... as someone had mentioned before about Al being able to be seen by animals, kids and the mentally unstable -- (I think that was Greg yet again) -- that is of the same stuff.

I hope that all that made sense. Let me know...

Thanks,
MJ

I also think, in that brief moment of clarity, when her thoughts were probably flying a mile a minute, as she saw the Admiral Al, and recognized him as the POW who'd turned and saw her hiding in the bushes--a moment which drove her to tears, as you may recall--that when she saw him, she may have said "Pulitzer" as she held out her camera, but I believe that she recognized him as THAT MAN....and held her camera out desperately, in the hopes that her photograph would do its work, tell his story and the story of all the POWs and bring them home.

In a related, but slightly OT tack, I've over the last several months toyed with the idea of writing a short pre-MI fic of Beth, married to Dirk, and what might have happened on the day THAT photograph was released to the general public. I used it in an integral way in the post-MI fic (pluggery warning), "Beth," that I've been working on for 10 years. :)

That would be a beautiful story. I'm sure your great way of writing would capture the obvious internal struggle and disappointment in herself that Beth faced. I hope it gets written :D

thanks mcduck. you were the only one that answered my actual question. no offense but i knew how she could see al, i gussed from my very first viewing of this episode that it was an alpha state. , i was just wondering why she said "pulitzer in response to seeing al, and your answer makes sense to me mc duck.

and i am glad none of you are annoyed by my questions, hehe.

and i still wonder about the tom thing?

Re: > Re: "Leap Home Part II"

Wow, newleaper...thanks. If/when I do write it, I will be sure and let you know.

SamBeckettfann....I'm glad I wasn't reading too much into your question with my answer. I can do that sometimes...glad in this case my ramblings were actually helpful to you. :) In case you haven't noticed, I love to talk about Al. <g>

btw....I think QL Nut answered your Tom question here:
As for Tom calling Sam "little brother," it was a combination of being a reference to how Sam acted during the leap (reminding Tom of himself because of course he saw "Magic") and just for an interesting type of "kiss with history."

Re: > Re: "Leap Home Part II"

QlNut, sorry if i sounded offending, i was not meaning it rufely, but i do tend to sound rude unitentionally, so i am sorry.

Re: > Re: "Leap Home Part II"

I'm glad you're here SamBeckettFann...I'm a newbie to the show, and you being so outgoing has made me want to post more than actually lurk.

> Re: > Re: "Leap Home Part II"

QlNut, sorry if i sounded offending, i was not meaning it rufely, but i do tend to sound rude unitentionally, so i am sorry.

It's OK, it wasn't that serious. ;) And yes, I agree that it's a good thing that a lot of questions are being asked again which helps resuscitate the board. I guess a lot of people have off for the summer so we should be getting a lot of newbies. OK, back to the regularly scheduled topic...

Re: > Re: > Re: "Leap Home Part II"

hehe yes. i am around a lot school or no becasue i never have anything better to do.

now back to the topic like you said, i am still not sure what to make of the whole Tom thing where he called "Magic", little brother? i mean i think my best friend is right and he was like saying that as like Sam's warning had spoken through Magic, or whatever, but i am still confused becasue if i am not mistaken, i could have sworn i saw his smile get bigger when sam began to leap.

This may be a stupid question (or at least one that has been answered a thousand times before) but: It's obvious that Tom survived this one day, but do we ever find out if he survived the whole war??? If it's actually mentioned in The Leap Home II, I'm sorry for bothering you... this is not my day |I

Actually, it is barely mentioned later in a fifth season episode, which I don't want to spoil you if you haven't seen anything from that yet.

now back to the topic like you said, i am still not sure what to make of the whole Tom thing where he called "Magic", little brother?

In "The Leap Home," as you know, Sam had warned Tom all throughout the episode about Vietnam and April 8, 1970. Once Sam leaped to that point in time, to Tom, "Magic" started acting funny (a little funnier than usual as he began to remind Tom of Sam with his warnings). Tom even says so at one point, where he says something along the lines of, "You remind me of my little brother."

So, once Tom survived the day at the end of the episode, he had "Magic" to thank for helping to save him, which he just called him "little brother" because of the similarities. Tom made the reference metaphorically; he didn't actually see Sam (or maybe he did ;) ). To Tom, Sam made the warnings and "Magic" actually saved him. He was kind of crediting Sam in a way, even though "Magic" might not understand. That's really the best I can explain it. Hope that helps.

EDIT: All right, I guess to help make it a tad bit more clearer, Tom was thanking Sam through "Magic." I guess it's kind of a similarity that Tom and Sam have as brothers as in thanking people through other people. We see Sam do this in a Season 5 episode for example, again without giving too much away. Sam knows that others around him don't see him as himself, but when Sam is overcome with emotion, he just doesn't care. Perhaps Tom felt Sam's presence subconsciously which compelled him to call "Magic" "little brother."

ooooh! that makes totally sense. i had a feeling from the beginning that it was something like that. i still wonder about Tom's smile widening when Sam began to leap though. but maybe it was just a cowinkie dink.

DAMN! NO! OHHHHHH! THE PACIENCE.....IT FREAKING BURNS! SSSSSS!

ahh, i am sorry, i'm ok, really i am, *deep breath* i just needed to get that out of my system. i'm cool, i'm fine.

SamBeckettFann, maybe you and I should start e-mailing eachother or something to deal with this horrible patience problem! It's a hard thing to deal with...especially since the episode guides are only a few clicks away......

Wait until you see Sam as Katy McBain.........
WHOA..... You will be as cocky and irritable as he was by the end of it.

I know that I was.....

All this makes me want to do it pull out the battered up old VHS tapes that has all the episodes with the commercials in them and rewatch them.....

I may have to do that.

Nighty night guys and gals.

MJ

i am sorry, i don't mean to cause trouble. i am just being goofy, i am not really freaking out. this is a problem that is not at all new to me and often is seen the wrong way in my family as well. i ocme from a fmaily of goofballs, so as much as i wish i could control it, i can't, i am just goofy sometimes, but i guess i need to greatly work on not making it osund so real. i don't mean to though, really. i am sorry!
