“The lives you've touched... touched others, and those lives, others. You've done a lot of good Sam Beckett, and you can do a lot more,”

There are many times when I sit and wonder about the times our paths cross in each step we take. For instance, who knew when I got up one morning, and went through my daily duties, coming home to turn on the TV and watch Quantum Leap the night I did. To find almost ten years later I am talking to a group of people who share the exact same love for this show as I do.

What if I had done something slightly different that day, would I be sitting here now?

I often find what each of us does in our daily lives connect us all in some cosmic force of nature, or is it fate or just serendipity?

Like Sam’s String, if you bundle it up into a ball each point that touches sends him into someone’s life putting right what once went wrong, therefore, he not only touched that person but many people from then on. As those people touched others and so on, just like Al the Bartender said:

“The lives you've touched... touched others, and those lives, others. You've done a lot of good Sam Beckett, and you can do a lot more,”

How many lives are we touching by the kindness we give out each day we live our lives, by simply giving up a seat on the bus. Or even helping someone simply by giving him or her directions, and even giving a beggar a small bit of change from your pocket.  Just a simple smile goes along way.

Everything happens for a reason, which we may not understand.

I am reminded of a book I read once and it really made me think, even though the book is fiction, there were a lot of things that really touched me in a lot of ways. Just like Quantum Leap’s string theory, and how our paths cross.

The thing that I found so amazing about this book is that at the front there is this quote from the book:

“Each smallest act of kindness reverberates across great distances and spans of time, affecting lives unknown to the one whose generous spirit was the source of this good echo, because kindness is passed on and grows each time it’s passed, until a simple courtesy becomes an act of selfless courage years later and far away. Likewise, each small act of meanness, each expression of hatred each act of evil.“- This momentous Day, H R White.

“Then it goes on to quote: Nobody understands Quantum Theory.” – Richard Feynman.

This book is called “From the Corner of his Eye.”- By Dean Koontz. If anyone feels compelled to read it.

I also touched how often this example is used in so many analogies, like the movie, “Pay it Forward.”

“Trevor, the 12-year-old hero of Pay It Forward, thinks of quite an idea. He describes it to his mother and teacher this way: "You see, I do something real good for three people. And then when they ask how they can pay it back, I say they have to Pay It Forward. To three more people. Each. So nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven." He turned on the calculator, punched in a few numbers. "Then it sort of spreads out, see. To eighty-one. Then two hundred forty-three. Then seven hundred twenty-nine. Then two thousand, one hundred eighty-seven. See how big it gets?"”

Again, see how this shows how we are touching one another’s lives through one act of kindness, by helping someone.

Putting it into practice:

From all that I have said, I hope that it hasn’t been a waste of time. And what I hope most of all, is that we all stop and think before we interact with people. How we can do our best to help others? Touching other peoples lives by doing good to them. We can’t change the past like Sam, but we can help to make the future a brighter place.
