Confessions of a "Quantum Leap" Fan

Now that the Sci-Fi Channel has discontinued showing "Quantum Leap" reruns, one must find other ways to see the show.  Of course, the most obvious source is videotape.  I myself have compiled a nice collection of "Quantum Leap" episodes on eight tapes, all done between October 2001 and July 2002.  On six of those eight tapes, I taped seven episodes on eight-hour tapes, and on the other two six-hour tapes, I have 5 on each.  Now, whenever I feel pangs to watch Sam Beckett wearing a dress, strutting in boxers, taking off his shirt, or just to see Sam for the sake of seeing him, I can pop in a tape.  I'll always have "Quantum Leap" around.

How does an individual with a dislike for science-fiction become a "Quantum Leap" fan, not knowing anything about the stars or the concept?  It's quite simple, really.  One Sunday afternoon in late September 2001, I was cruising through the channels, as I often find myself doing on Sundays, when around 80 channels tend to air 80 programs I have little desire to watch.  Lo and behold, I see a really good-looking guy walking around on the screen.  I'm immediately compelled to watch this handsome man.  Upon looking at the TV Guide Channel listings, I see that its a show called "Quantum Leap," and its on next as part of a marathon.  Now, I've heard of this show before, but I don't think I'd ever heard of Scott Bakula before this.  I caught the last fifteen minutes of "The Leap Back," and had no clue what was going on.  I was compelled to see the next episode in the marathon, which was coincidentally the last episode in the series, "Mirror Image."   Many hard-core fans don't even understand the ending, but I had a reasonable excuse--I'd never seen this show before.  I knew I needed more "Quantum Leap."  I made it my goal to watch this show every afternoon at five (the time slot "QL" aired in last fall).

As I began to understand "Quantum Leap" more and more each day, the more I became a fan.  Sam Beckett became a hero, someone that could do anything.  I wrote several essays for college last fall (my freshman year) about "Quantum Leap," and received decent grades on them.

Has "Quantum Leap" benefitted me in any way?  It sure has.  I've gotten good grades on essays, which in turn helped my grades my first semester (I've always counted writing among my strengths), and I have begun to appreciate science-fiction, although this is moreso a drama than anything.  I also appreciate the gifts of the talented Scott Bakula, who is also immensely gorgeous for a man his age.   After September 11th, American needed a hero, and Sam Beckett has proven to be like all the firefighters and police officers.

However, I don't think I'll ever get past the fact that Sam had to wear a diaper.   That's guts.  I hate changing them, so I couldn't imagine wearing them.  Yikes.

Well, my vision is beginning to cease, so this is where it ends.  Right here.   Or is it right here?  Wherever it ends, I don't think my appreciation for "Quantum Leap" will.  At least, not until something else comes along.   Just a thought.  Just scrap that and forget this fan ever said that.

The confessions of a "Quantum Leap" fan are never-ending.  Thankfully, this article is.
