Through lives, peoples and cities, to this place, Mainframe. My format? I think... Leaper. To change the history for better, to put right what went wrong. ReBoot! _________________________________________________________________ Chapter 1 Project Quantum Leap Stallions Gate, New Mexico May 16, 2002 "Gooshie!", Admiral Al Calavicci shouted. "Where is Sam? And when is he?" "Ziggy's verifying now, to re-establish the contact with Dr. Beckett", he answered. Fifteen minutes later, a feminine voice emerged of the Control Room's speakers. "We got determine the date and the place of the Dr. Beckett's Leap", Ziggy said. "He's somewhere in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Net , on November 12, 1999." Al was perplexed. What history was that that Sam was somewhere in MITNET? He will ask ("shout" would be a more exact word) so that Ziggy explained that very well, when Gooshie announced: "We re-established contact with Dr. Beckett!" Al left running for the Imaging Chamber. _________________________________________________________________ Mainframe The Pendulum of the Clockspeed Room oscillated in a constant way, when it stopped all of a sudden. He was some stopped three nanoseconds, when he was traveled by a vibration, and he later oscillated usually again. Bob was fixing (fixing?) his car when he had a strange sensation, similar to the one that he felt when the CodeMaster arrived in Mainframe. On that moment, a vidwindow opened up and he saw Phong, that said: "Bob, would be better you to come to the Principal Office." "What's going on?", he asked. "The sensors detected a great increase of the energy level of Mainframe. This energy seems to be of some type of field..." "Some type of contention field?!", did Bob ask, alert, would imagining Megabyte be preparing some. "That would explain that strange sensation", he thought. But Phong rejected that idea. "No, it's too diffuse to be addressed for a contention field or a firewall. It seems to be more with the energy field of a tear in the interface." "I'm going." _________________________________________________________________ Sam was observing the Principal Office (he was more and more finding strange - and thanking - that 'telepathy effect' with his host), when he noticed to appear the Imaging Chamber blue light. Al came through the door. He was dressed in a more normal way than of habit, Sam thought; red jacket and blue pants. Al said: "How you do...", his voice died when seeing Mainframe. "Al, this place is strange! Here doesn't have people, only two types of robots, a looking like a soccer ball and another that more seems with that HAL 9000 panel! What Ziggy does say?" Al - as soon as he recovered of the shock of seeing Mainframe - consulted the handlink. "Well... how in the hell is it?!?", he shouted, when he received the answer. "What was?", Sam asked , concerned. "Ziggy says...", he recovered the breath, "Ziggy says that is a chance of 97,8% of you to be a computer sprite!" "A WHAT?!", Sam asked in the limit of the perplexity. _________________________________________________________________ Project Quantum Leap Waiting Room "Hey, what am I doing here?", was the first thing that Enzo Matrix said after changing places with Sam, when noticing the austere atmosphere of the Waiting Room. Dr. Verbena Beeks entered in the room. "Are you alright?" Enzo looked at for Verbena as if she was crazy. He was walking for Mainframe, and when he gave for himself, he was in this room! How could he be well?! And said that to Dr. Beeks. "Well, you are in the Waiting Room of the Project Quantum Leap, a Government top-secret project ". - she explained, after calming him. "Here stay the people with who Dr. Beckett changed places." "How 'changed places'?", did Enzo ask distrustful. "And who is that Dr. Beckett?" "Well, Dr. Beckett is the creator of this project, that it consists, basically, in traveling in time changing places with another person in the time - that process is called Quantum Leap - and the person "chosen" in this case was... you!" "Do you think I'm low density?! In the nanosecond in that he changed places with me, my friends would see that I'm not there!" Verbena Beeks thought strange that choice of words. Low density? Nanosecond? But she continued. "Would be like this if it didn't happen a fact... " Verbena made a gesture as if she tried to remind his name, a trick that most of the time worked so that the host said your name. Ziggy usually said who occupied the Sam's "aura", but in this case, she didn't do it. "Enzo", answered the sprite, falling in the trick. "Well, Enzo, would be like this if it didn't happen a small detail: Dr. Beckett when he Leaps into a host of another time, he's with the host's 'aura', and for the others of the same time he's the host. And the host, when he comes for here, he stays with the Dr. Beckett's "aura". If you doubt, give a glance in the mirror.", she made a gesture, with the hand, indicating a mirror. Enzo got up of the table where was seated and at he was looked in the mirror. He saw a man with about 40 hours (years), of brown hair and brown eyes. "That is bad, very bad!", murmured Enzo, when he recovered of the shock. _________________________________________________________________ Greg Carter's Apartament Near of the McGill University (connected with MITNET) November 12, 1999 Greg Carter was with a flea behind the ear. The monitor had blinked as a not well syntonized TV. He will pass a diagnosis program in his computer when knocked on the door of the apartment. It was your friend, Colin. "Hey, Greg! There here that graphic program that you wanted", said the other, showing a CD-ROM. He gave to Greg the CD-ROM and he kiddied: "Finally you will install something besides games into your computer!" "O.K.; it's true that I have various installed games, but are not too many like you say that I have!" Colin gave a quizzical glance. Greg shrugged. He inserted the disk in the drive and he clicked in the CD-ROM's icon; at the side it was the HD's icon. The HD's name was Mainframe.
