Some have even thrown up their temporal hands and claimed that God is loading the dice in Quantum Leaping. I propose the following interpretation of the superstring theory of leaping: In Dr. Becket's original study of 1993/1957 he suggests that a person's lifetime is like a string. Conciousness travels along this string in a linear fashion, though the phenomenon of remembering (in certain forms) is a form of Quantum Leaping to the past, and prescience a form of leaping into the future. What Dr. Becket has done is to release the anchor to the present, loosening the tension on his own string. If that were all that were happening one would expect Dr. Becket to travel only to points in his own past along his own string. However the threads of our lives are intermingled so that it is possible that once separated from his own lifeline Dr. Becket could easily join the lifeline of any other individual. That Dr. Becket experiences only one other lifeline at a time (defining time as a stream of consciousness) is due to the quantum nature of the phenomenon - he in effect tunnels from one superstring to another. When leaping Dr. Becket experiences a bounce effect - while attracted to some lifelines he tends to bounce around through time, often for several days, without latching on until he reaches one lifeline involved in a crisis situation. I propose that crisis situations act as strange attractors - to employ the superstring notion, they are tangles in the web. Dr. Becket would simply not be attracted to non-crisis lifelines. Nor could he enter the lifetime at a point of maximum crisis - the web is too dense - he would latch on to any lifeline in the crisis tangle several days or hours before the actual crisis takes place. I would also like to address myself to the release phenomenon. Many are of the opinion that Dr. Becket is only released upon doing a good deed. However, several of the releases from lifetimes have occured due to relatively minor acts - removing a cat from a tree, making a suggestion to a singer etc. If leaping in can be viewed as being caught in a tangle, leaping out can be viewed as a release. Having passed the moment of crisis (resolved the tangle), Dr. Becket is ready to leap. However it may require one additional smoothing of the web to allow the release, just as a single crystal can suddenly freeze a supercooled liquid, or a small perturbation can suddenly disturb a dynamic system. (See Mandelbrot, B. on fractal behaviour, superstrings and Quantum Leaping, Nature, Aug, 1997.) I would of course like to claim first publication of this theory, but I am at a disadvantage as that Dr. Becket himself has the opportunity to republish it prior to this publication, and has every right to since he probably thought of this first, even if he came up with this several years from now. ======================================================================= Life is a tradeoff between time, space and complexity. >>>>>>>>>>>> STAMP OUT LOCAL PRE-EMPTIONS OF NETWORK PROGRAMMING!! <<<<<<<<<<<<< Quote: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance" A Body Shop t-shirt Debbie Brown: I'net: deb@jloda.cci.com | Prodigy: NCNX32A UUCP: uunet!ccicpg!cci632!deb | Alt: dmb7229@ultb.isc.rit.edu Disclaimer: "Disclaim THIS, pal!"
