I grew up in a small town
in Kentucky called Sample. We only had one television channel and no computer, so I always
had to find other means of entertaining myself. Fortunately for me, there were many
grassroots musicians living in my immediate area. Some of my favorite memories of that old
town involved sitting around on the front porch just listening to these guys play. There
came a time when I wasn't content with just sitting there, however. So, I picked up the
guitar when I was 13 and started joining in. That was the official beginning of my
interest in the creative arts.
When high school rolled
around, I was tinkering around with the idea of becoming an actor even though my interest
in music was strong as ever. I also found my mind wandering over to the visual arts as
well as creative writing. I felt like a kid in a candy store! So, naturally, I decided to
do it all. My freshman year I became a member of chorus, chamber singers, drama club, the
National Art Honor Society, and began writing poetry for our school paper.
While most everyone else
from Sample dropped out of school by the age of 17, I kept going. By my junior year, I
really started to feel like I was a part of something. My best friend and I began
producing monthly animated shorts about a young, small-town musician trying to make his
way through the world. We pitched it as "John Mellencamp meets Disney." It was
called "I Have Dreamed So Strangely." I portrayed many of the characters,
including the lead Chase Minor. The other characters were cast from episode to episode. We
had completed 14 shorts by the time our senior year rolled around and it all ended in
1996.
After high school, I moved
away from Sample to chase my dreams at college. There I continued my still very strong
interest in music, majoring in Music Education and Performance. I also continued with
acting, taking two drama classes and joining the local players. And, of course, I
continued with visual arts and creative writing. Before prematurely leaving the school two
and a half years later, I had experienced much more than I ever could have imagined back
in my old hometown.
I have toured Great Britain
with a music troupe, portrayed several characters on stage and small screen, learned so
much about using acrylics to bring a scene to life, hit a State Fair stage with just me
and my guitar, received a personal letter of recognition from Martha Wilkenson for my
writing, and on and on. I feel so blessed. I believe with all my heart that these
experiences have changed me forever. I'll never take life for granted... There's so much
out there!
It is a privilege to be
portraying my all-time favorite television character Dr. Samuel Beckett. I've been
faithful to the show since I first discovered it back in Sample. My household couldn't
pick up NBC so I had to walk to my aunt's house to tape it. Her signal was fuzzy, but the
message came through loud and clear. I never missed a night; rain, snow, sleet, or shine I
walked that half-mile. So, I hope I can do Sam the justice that he so rightly deserves.
Thanks for the chance.
In Peace,
Shane
