Today in Quantum Leap History: September 12

"Leap. Die. Repeat."
When Ben leaps into one of five people in an elevator at a 1962 nuclear reactor, he must figure which one triggers a bomb that kills them all. Each time the bomb goes off, he leaps into another one of them a few moments earlier, resetting the scene.

This was one of my favorite episodes of the new series. I would put it up there with some of the best of the original too.

Time loop stories had been around for very long time. But clearly Groundhog Day mainstreamed the idea. I feel if the original got a 6th season we might have gotten something like this. That movie came out in the middle of season 5. It’s long term influence had not been felt yet.

Even though this show was slow to address the idea that a higher power was effecting Ben’s Leaps - I would argue that this is one of biggest examples of proof that GFTW was in play here. It was one of the best uses of Janis and her scientific explanations- but a lot here is beyond her understanding. Similar to how things were reset at end of the original Halloween episode and Evil Leaper episode for Sam. This time a rest button is being pushed by a higher power multiple times in order for Ben to fix things.
