It seems that the switch pod in Al's car is designed in the same style as the first version of the handlink. I think I'll call that style of the technology "Series 1" and the gummi bear-looking versions "Series 2." Just as in real-life, where evidently the handlink wasn't fully designed or built in time for filming "Genesis," I guess the same could be said about the Project's technology. I like to think of it as if the Series 1 handlink got upgrades during the course of Sam's leaping until it got "killed" by Al. And then of course fortunately it was right before they switched to the new technology.
