Rodette-Vision

Have you ever thought about what actually made Quantum Leap such a wonderful show? Or have you thought of why they may have cancelled it?

First, I’d like to put the lines that Ziggy says at the beginning of each episode (the words we all know by heart):

Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as Quantum Leap.   Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Dr. Beckett prematurely stepped into the Project's Accelerator and vanished.

He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia, and facing a mirror image that was not his own.  Fortunately, contact with his own time was maintained through brainwave transmissions with Al, the Project Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Dr. Beckett can see and hear.

Trapped in the past, Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.

This synopsis of the story lets the person watching know that there’s something about this man that must be honorable. It also lets the person watching know that there is a chance… although slim… that Sam Beckett will make it back home.

Let me give my opinion:

This television series that ran for five years gave the watcher something to look forward to. That sense of: "What, where and when will he leap to next?" was what everyone wanted to know, see, and hear. It was something that touched people in every aspect of their lives… whether that aspect wanted to be touched or not. Sensitive topics were brought to light: segregation, white supremacy, abortion, adoption, and rape just to name a few. This show seemed to bring a morality with it or others lacked. It was and is family oriented. The writers didn’t need to cuss to get the point across that Sam was in a bad situation. Just the tone of his "Oh boy" told you volumes of information. Through all of the shows… even until the very end… you’ve been on the leap with Sam, rooting him on, crying with him, and laughing with him.

"Sam Beckett never made it home…"

These words at the end of the finale episode caused everyone to go into distress. We wanted Sam to leap home to his family, wife and friends. Why? Why did they write the episode to end that way?

Only Bellasario knows for sure. Could it be that the networks had enough? Could it be that they decided that Bellasario had "preached" his morals and ethics long enough? It seems to me that with how Quantum Leap "preached" without having to get up on the summit to do so on any topic, that it could be one of the reasons why.

The people who watched his show… were impacted by this show. It touched not only your heart… and your mind… but also it made you think. It made a difference.

Several shows had the same concept. A few that I can think of are: Little House On The Prairie, Highway to Heaven, Touched By An Angel, Growing Pains and Perfect Strangers to name a few. All of these shows use all of the same emotions and ethical values that Quantum Leap had/have. Look where they all are now. Rather interesting don’t you think?

It’s hard to find anything on TV anymore that can lift your spirits when you’re down. What Matt Searcy said in Guest-Vision is the honest truth. Quantum Leap was/is the only show that could truly make you laugh one minute then cry the next. It will be a show that will continue to touch people.

*If* the show does come back… whether it is a female leaping back and forth in time putting things right that once went wrong… or leaping to go find her father and bring him back home… whatever the case, I hope that the people writing the scripts will keep the same ethical values that made the Quantum Leap what it is/was. Let’s have a show back that isn’t afraid to hit on those heart-touching, warming topics… and make us think again.

Have a wonderful and beautiful week, everyone.

Keep a smile and a song in your heart.

I’ll leave you with the song from "Pool Hall Blues":

When you’re feelin’ low, and there’s trouble all around you,

When it seems like nothin’s gonna turn out right,

When you just can’t see any silver linin’

Put you hands together, and just hold on tight.

He’ll be there when you need some comfort.

He’ll be there when you need a friend.

He’ll be there when the darkness keeps closin’ all around you

But you gotta believe when you get down on your knees

He’ll be there to make the sun shine again.

You gotta believe when you get down on your knees

He’ll be there to make the sun shine again.
