Starlight is an amazing charity, and I've had quite a lot to do with them over the past 18 months in my job working on a childrens unit. They've granted wishes for several of our kids with life threatening/life limiting illnesses, ranging from paying for a physiotherapy vest for a little girl with brittle bones that are too fragile for conventional chest clearing exercises, to sending a girl battling leukaemia for the third time to the set of Lost in Hawaii. They also provide distraction boxes for use by play specialists/nursery nurses like me during procedures and blood tests, and entertainment centres called Starlight Centres, which have games consoles and DVD players inside. They also pay for Christmas parties and entertainment every year.
Starlight is also the official charity of Leap Back 2009.

ABOUT STARLIGHT
Starlight Children's Foundation grants wishes to seriously and terminally ill children, and provides fun and laughter for youngsters in every hospital and hospice in the UK.
There are 2,500 children diagnosed with a life-threatening illness every year, and currently Starlight is able to grant 500 wishes. Many children spend Christmas in hospital; for all of them it means missing out on much of the festive fun, for some it will be their last.
Starlight's aim is to provide a special wish for every child who needs one, giving them the opportunity to fulfill their life's ambition, whatever the future holds. The £10,000 will grant ten of these children their wish in time for Christmas, while £100,000 would bring Starlight a step closer to their goal of giving every sick child in the UK the gift of a perfect day.
SAM'S STORY
Sam Jones, from Cambridgeshire, had his wish to be a soldier granted by Starlight in 1999. His mum, Sue, says: 'In our darkest hour as Sam fought leukaemia, Starlight brought a glimmer of hope into his life by making his dream to be a soldier come true. To see his face when his 'taxi', a 62-ton tank, came to pick him up was a picture. It was my little boy's dream come true.
'Three months later, when Sam passed away, the soldiers he met that day gave him a military send-off which he would have loved. It helped us cope with the saddest day of our lives.'
