Sam first met Dr. Garner upon leaping into a top-secret government project in the late 1950s. Since then, Sam encountered Dr. Garner several times throughout his leaping journey and the two men became close friends sharing the secrets of time travel.

Side Notes From The Character's Creator

"To me, Garner is Sam a generation too early. He was just as smart, just as creative, but the technology wasn't there to support his ideas completely. In turn, as I included him in more stories after his introduction in "Guinea Pig" (Season 10), he seemed to evolve into a mentor character for Sam; a kindred spirit that understood the science that allowed Sam to travel into the past and see him. It also became a positive outlet for Sam that he was not alone; that somebody knew him for what he was and understood him. In a way, he could be viewed as a father figure for someone who lost his own father.

Garner may have died in 2003 in an effort to help Sam foil a plot involving terrorists, but the beauty of time travel means that he might yet turn up again in the past."
