I've already got a story started with ideas along these lines, somewhat completed which I started about 2 months ago. I hope it will fit in somewhere but no worries if it doesn't, but it is very, very similar to what you are planning.

Some of what I wrote concerning the immediate conclusion to MI "Mirror Mirror: Aftermath" and A Leap For Al really hint at the past... as does my ongoing "Guilty Until Proven Innocent" story.
It would be nice to explore the unaltered past! A time when Sam was more Naive, Donna was still hurt, Introducing Gooshie, Tina, Verbeena and of course, when Al was more gritty!

Loved the preview for the premiere. I'm not too up on political stuff, so I'd never even heard about what had been proposed in that State of the Union address. Very, *very* interesting.
