Sam saves Al from being fired by threatening Agent Adams, saying that he will take his quantum reactor design away from the project if Al loses his job. He then promises to help Al with his drinking problem in exchange for the agreement. Sam discovers that the energy ball controlling SID has regeration properties that allow rapid healing, but he, Gooshie, and Bobby keep that fact a secret from everyone besides Tina and Al.

Title of Episode: One Man's Dream

Episode Number:
002

Date of Episode:
F
riday, February 3rd  to February 10th, 1984

Location of Episode:
Washington, D.C. and Starbright Project Complex, New Mexico

Kiss With History:
The Law Suit for 'breach of contract' against the RSNA was threatened in 1984 by Dallas city officials, and in 1980, William S. Moore, Ph.D., gave the New Horizons lecture titled "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: Past, Present and Future." The Washington Convention Center of 1984 was inadequate to meet the needs of the RSNA and so the RSNA had to reduce the number of attendees and scientific exhibits by 20%. Extra trailers surrounded the Convention Center causing traffic jams during peek times throughout the RSNA's Scientific Assembly.

Writer's Notes:
I first thought about this part of Sam's life when I first saw the episode "Star-Crossed" three years ago (2000) and I wondered what it would have been like for Sam to meet Donna only to lose her at the altar.

General Notes:
None

Summary:
During the dinner Sam is distracted with his thoughts and doesn't notice that the speakers are summarising their speeches of the conference earlier that afternoon. The summaries are for the benefit of those that couldn't attend the conference (due to the 1980 Dallas problems). Sam's mind blanks out with his nervousness, as he approaches the podium he tries to recall his speech and he can't understand why his photographic memory should fail him now. Eventually Sam plucks up enough courage to ask Donna why she is leaving the project and is very surprised at her answer. An enraged Donna threatens to leave the SBP there and then and walks out on Sam and he follows her despite Al's warning. After a tempestuous discussion Sam manages to talk Donna into staying on, but only for the week as was promised him previously, he hadn't gained anything, only gotten back what he'd lost. Now Sam has only seven days to persuade her into continuing at the project. Sam has a plan but Al is skeptical as to how it will pan out. He also discovers where he met Donna before and what her experiments in Utah were all about. Donna sees the orb in the 'glass room' start to take on strange properties.

Title of Episode: With A Little Help: Part One

Date of Episode: Friday, March 16th, 1984

Location of Episode: The Starbright Project Complex, New Mexico

Kiss With History: Microsoft's launch of its first GUI (Graphical User Interface) enabled, multi-tasking operating system, 'Windows', in April of 1984.

Writer's Notes: As this is a continuance of "One Man's Dream" my thoughts haven't changed and so these writer's notes haven't changed much either.

I first thought about this part of Sam's life when I first saw the episode "Star-Crossed" four years ago (2000). I wondered of the struggles Sam encountered along the way and what it would have been like for Sam to meet Donna only to lose her at the altar.

Special thanks to Helen for being a great source of inspiration and to Jennie for the help in proofing, and to Damon who I would like to acknowledge in the co-writing of Gooshie's return in 'Part 2'. I would also like to credit Damon with the dialogue for the scene in Agent Ross Adams' office, also in 'Part 2'.

Summary: Sam has now been at the project for over two months and is studying, along with Donna and Gooshie, some strange 'events' with the orb, but the faithful Gooshie has gone AWOL. Al however, gets into deeper trouble with Ross Adams and the CIA. Can Sam find out what has happened to Gooshie and figure out a way to redeem Al's character before it's too late? Friday night comes to a climax when the orb attacks Sam.

Title of Episode: Chiefest of Sinners: Part One

Date of Episode: Thursday, May 17, 1984

Location of Episode: Starbright Project, Stallion’s Gate, New Mexico

Kiss With History: none

Writer's Notes: I’m not quite sure exactly where this idea came from; I was alternating between the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack and Elvis #1 Hits CDs while mindlessly cropping inserts at work, and the idea came to me during "Suspicious Minds"—what if one of Al’s legendary conquests came to him, claiming to be pregnant? It snowballed from there.

In other musical inspirations, the title and some additional aspects of the story came to me on a drive to Florida while listening to the Third Day, Steven Curtis Chapman, and the aforementioned Elvis CD, and I was reminded of the Apostle Paul’s statement in I Timothy that he himself was the "chiefest of sinners." Hence the title—which also plays a bit on events within the story as well.

Many thanks to: Brian Greene, Helen Earl, Sue Johnson, Dawn Decicco, and Eleiece Krawiec for encouragement during the writing of this story.

Summary: Weitzman sends another tour group to the project; in its midst, one Chief Petty Officer Shannon MacLean, nearly eight months pregnant. As if the tour group alone isn’t disrupting things at the project, MacLean accuses Al of fathering her child during a drunken weekend in Las Vegas, yet Al swears he has never met her before. Ross Adams overhears the accusation, and forces General Collins to confront Al, resulting in Al’s temporary suspension from the Project while things are sorted out. Rumors spread like wildfire and staff members take sides, meanwhile Al tries to cope with stresses that tempt him to drink again. It is revealed that Alia has Leaped into Shannon MacLean in an attempt to discredit Al and get him removed from the Starbright Project and dishonorably discharged from the Navy for fraternization (thus canceling him out of Project Quantum Leap); the hologram Zoe explains that Lothos intends to abort the real MacLean’s child and have Alia frame Al for pushing the pregnant woman down a flight of stairs (by falling on her own).

Title of Episode: Chiefest of Sinners: Part Three

Date of Episode: Friday, May 18, 1984

Location of Episode: Starbright Project, Stallion’s Gate, New Mexico and Santa Fe General Hospital, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Kiss With History: none

Donna comes to an understanding where Sam and Al’s relationship is concerned and begins empathizing with Al for the first time. Her newfound empathy also causes her to reach out to Tina. Title of Episode: Chiefest of Sinners: Part Four

Date of Episode: Friday, May 18 – Saturday, May 19, 1984

Location of Episode: Starbright Project, Stallion’s Gate, New Mexico and Santa Fe General Hospital, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Kiss With History: U.S. Military action in Beirut, 1983

Writer's Notes: Well, this story really snowballed a lot farther than I’d anticipated. Many thanks to Brian Greene, Helen Earl, Sue Johnson, Dawn Decicco, and Eleiece Krawiec for encouragement, proofing, and soundboarding during the writing of this story. Thanks also to Damon Sugameli for his assistance in selecting a repertoire of songs appropriate to Ross Adams. Thanks to my "big brothers" GoofyKeith and Scott, who unknowingly contributed to this story with their discussion of Scottish slang. (That's where I picked up "bampot" btw)  LOL

Summary WITHOUT spoilers: Shannon MacLean emerges from her coma, but has no memory of confronting Al. What she does remember is disturbing at best. Ross Adams continues his pursuit of "the truth" about Al and the chief, but has his own ideas about what the facts should be. Sam has another interesting encounter with the orb, with startling facts revealed as a result. Various theories are proposed to explain the events of the past couple of days, and the strangest sounding one may be closest to the truth.

Summary WITH spoilers: Verbena Beeks considers pursuing a degree in psychiatry after her encounter with Shannon MacLean. Ross Adams continues to alienate Project staff with his attitude, causing even affable Perry Thompson to dislike him. The orb’s fondness for Al is expressed. Shannon gives a visitor’s perspective of the Evil Leaper project. Perry Thompson is promoted to Director of Transportation. Shannon requests permission to give her son Albert as a middle name, and Al makes her promise to stay in touch. Tina and Al are ultimately reconciled, with Donna and Tina becoming closer as a result of Donna’s intervention and assistance.
